Reader to supply dry Sprayed Concrete to UK’s longest tunnel

Reader Cement Products will commence supply of it’s renowned Spraycrete40® product to assist with the completion of the Yorkshire Potash Tunnel project.

Strabag AG, the design and build contractors, will be driving a tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the rock and robotically spray a steel fibre reinforced concrete lining with Reader's ready mixed Spraycrete.

The 37 km (23 mile) long tunnel will stretch between Woodsmith Mine near Whitby in North Yorkshire and the Wilton International complex on Teesside, England. The project commenced in 2016 and the cutting of the tunnel bore in April 2019; the development is estimated to be completed in 2021. When done, it is reported the tunnel will be the longest in the United Kingdom with an estimated cost of £2.4 billion*.

Reader has been supplying major global tunnelling projects with dry and wet sprayed concrete mixes and other technical blended cements for more than 30 years, notably the Channel Tunnel and the Danish Storebælt tunnel projects. All specialised blended cement products are technically formulated, blended and packed at Readers three production sites in the East Midlands, UK, to the latest ISO 9001 quality assurance.

Woodsmith Mine. Sirius has gone to great lengths to ensure the project is sensitive to the local landscape: mineshaft head frames will be sunk below ground to reduce their visual impact; surface buildings will be kept to a minimum; and the entire site will be landscaped and screened by existing woodland to blend in with the surrounding area**.
